How does System restore work?

Windows XP periodically records a snapshot of your computer. These snapshots are called restore points. Windows XP also creates restore points at the time of significant system events (such as when an application or driver is installed) or you can create and name your own restore points at any time. If you?€?ve installed a program that has made your computer unstable, you can open system restore, choose a restore point, and return your computer to its previous stable state.

How to Enable or Disable System restore?

  • Properties My Computer Locate System Restore tap
  • If you want turn off system restore on all drives please check enable it or if you want turn off each drive click drive and click setting.

How to Restore windows by System Restore?

  • Click Start Menu > Programs > Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click System Restore.System Restore starts.
  • On First page click Restore my computer to an earlier time (if it is not already selected), and then click Next.
  • On the Select a Restore Point page, click the most recent system checkpoint in the

If you want start windows normally you will use system restore in safe mode.

  • Restart your computer, and then press F8 during the initial startup to start your computer in Safe Mode with a command prompt.
  • Type the following command at a command prompt, and then press ENTER:%systemroot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe

Follow the instructions that appear on the screen to restore your computer to an earlier state.



How to backup windows registry on windows xp or vista

Backup windows xp registry have three methods.

Method1: Use System Restore(windows xp) to create the restore point
- Open System Restore way 1. Start menu > Programs > Accessories > System Tools and then Click System Restore
- Open System Restore way 2. Click Start Menu, click Run, type %SystemRoot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe, and then click OK.
- On Welcome to System Restore page, click Create a restore point, and then click Next .
- Enter name for the restore point and then click Create.
- After the restore point has been created, click Close.

1.1. On Windows Vista - Click Start, type systempropertiesprotection in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER.
1.2. Wait for Windows to search for available disks and most recent restore points. In the System Properties dialog box, on the System Protection tab, click Create, 
1.3. Type a name for the restore point and then click Create. 
1.4. After the restore point has been created successfully, click OK two times.

Method2:Export Registry

- Open Registry Editer Start Menu > Run and then type regedit
- Go to Menu File > Export..
- Select Export Location , Export range and Enter name , Click Save

Method3:Backup System Stage

- Use NTBACKUP Utility Backup System Stage Data
- Start Menu > Run and then type ntbackup
- Use Advanced Mode
- Click Backup Tab Check front System Stage
- Enter Backup Media or File name
- Click Start Backup

  9. Start > Run type %temp% and OK delete all show files.
    • Delete unnessory file in folder Temp
  10. Disable Hibernate function.
    • Hibernate Function will use Hard disk space equal your memory installed
    • Open control panel
    • Open Hibernate tap
    • uncheck Enable Hibernation
    • Click apply
  11. Clear Paging File every your computer shutdown.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management
Set ClearPageFileAtShutdown = 1

What is QoS Packet Scheduler?

A component of the TCP/IP stack that’s installed by default. QoS Packet Scheduler, as it’s commonly abbreviated, controls the rate of flow for various network services.
By default, the Packet Scheduler limits the system to 20 percent of the bandwidth of a connection, but you can use this setting to override the default.

you can change setting QoS by doing the following. Note, this is not available in Windows XP Home Edition.

start menu > run type gpedit.msc

  • Locate Computer Configuration Expand Administrative Templates.
  • Expand Network
  • Click QoS Packet Scheduler
  • find an entry in QoS Packet Scheduler called “Limit Reservable Bandwidth”
  • Double-click on it.
  • Enable and change setting to 0%
  • Apply Setting

Now you can refresh your policy setting following this step;

start menu > run type gpupdate /force refreshing policy dialog will be show and automatic close shortly(to update new policy setting)

Way to disable or remove windows security center alert service on windows xp sp2

in windows xp services pack2 (sp2) WIndows Security Center service function will tell you about the status of your antivirus software, computer firewall, and windows automatic updates. The Security Center will show alert pop-up ballon if your antivirus software is out of date or turned off on-access scaning, firewall is turned off, or if Automatic Update disable or is not turned on.

If you’ve received alerts warning and you would like to turn notifications off, you can disable the antivirus alert, firewall alert, or automatic update alerts.

To disable the windows security center service, use the following steps:

  • click start run and type services.msc (Open service console dialog).
  • find and Locate the Security Center entry in the list.
  • right click and click Properties or Double-click Security Center and set it’s Startup type to Disabled.

If you wand to show only alert or two alert you can config windows security center

To Configuring the Security Center following this step:

  • Open control panel by Windows key + r key and type control.exe.
  • Open Security Center in list.
  • Click “change the way Security center alert me”.
  • check box alert setting you want to show and clik ok.


Why my DVD-ROM cannot read or access some dvd disc

this problem will occur when your computer still enable function “UDF file system”
(UDF = Universal Disk Format).

When you try open DVD media you may receive error message “Disc is not support”.

Fix this problem you must Disable UDF file system following this step. (Windows xp)
Edit the registry at your own risk. Make backups before you do this

1. Open Registry editer (start menu > run and type regedit)
2.Go to key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SYSTEM/ControlSet001/Service/Udfs
3. Delete or Rename that key (right click on key and rename)

reboot your computer.



What is hibernate function and how to use

What is hibernate function?
The use of Hibernate is energy-saving. It will put computer sytem in stand by mode. This function will shut down harddisk operation for saving energy.

How to open it?
Hibernate is the operating system function in both desktop and notebook.
It can be enable by following this step :

right-click on desktop then choose Properties - > Screen Saver - > Power and then click on Hibernate tab.

* If the Hibernate tab function is unavailable, your computer doesn’t support hibernate feature.
 
What’s happen if i use hipernate function?
Before shutting down harddisk operation, all information for example, program openning, document openning will be transferred from RAM to HardDisk then all operation will be shut down.
When you open your system again, all information will be recovery as same as before you are in standby mode. Please note that notebook which can use this function have to support Hibernate system as well.

However, if your disk drive is FAT32, you will be unable to recall this Hibernate function.

note :
If you enable hibernate function on your computer you must have harddisk space more than your memory because your computer will be reserve harddisk space for this function.

If  your windows XP  with Fast User Switching, the Shut Down menu will show the options to Stand By, Turn Off, or Restart your computer. You must hold down the Shift key, and the Stand By button will change to Hibernate.



how to send instant message dialog to someone on network

This method help you send a message dialog to any user on network by NET SEND command line.

Open command prompt by going to .. start > run > and type cmd

use command “net send”

Example:1
You want to send message “hello this is test msg from IT” to computer machine name “pc1″

follow this command
net send /DOMAIN:pc1 “hello this is test msg from IT” and press Enter

Example:2
You want to send same message to everyone on the network use this command

net send * “hello this is test msg from IT”

The message will be send to everyone

Remark

  • You can send a message only to a name that is active on the network. If you send the message to a user name, that user must be logged on and running the Messenger service to receive the message.
  • The Messenger service must be running for messages to be received. For more information about how to start a service


Refresh all tabs in IE7

This tip is for the IE7 user who like to surf the web with Tabbed Browsing. Normally, when we would like to refresh webpage in which tab, we will go to that tab and press Ctrl+R or press F5 to reload the webpage.

But if we would like to refresh all tabs, most of us will go to each individual tab and press CTRL+R or press F5 to reload each tabbed webpage, but there’s an easier way.

Just right click on any open tab and choose ‘Refresh All’. Then all tabs will be refresh themselves.



Display Microsoft Internet Explorer (IE7) Menu Bar on the top

For the users who are familiar with IE6, after IE7 installation, most of them are surprised where is Menu Bar ?
Actually, you can call on by pressing Alt.
However, if you would like the Menu Bar to be always show, please follow theses instructions :-

  1. Click ‘Start’ then ‘Run..’ (or press Windows+R) , type ‘regedit’ and click OK.
  2. In Registry Editor Program
  3. Go to key ‘HKEY_CURRENT_USER
    • SoftwareMicrosoftInternetExplorerToolbarWebBrowser’
  4. Click ‘WebBrowser’ list to see the list on the right side of program.
  5. Right click on space of the right side.
  6. Choose ‘New’ then ‘DWORD’
  7. Rename ‘DWORD’ to ITBar7Position and then ‘Enter’
  8. Double-click on this list and input value to ‘00000001′
  9. Click OK and exit from Registry Editor.

Close Internet Explorer 7 program. Reopen, now you will see IE7 Menu Bar as same as in IE6.



Windows Vista Tips : How to cancel Windows Aero

This method will help you disable or cancle Windows Aero function on Windows Vista 

To cancel Windows Aero function or Transparent Windows Vista in order to recall basic appearance :-

  1. Click ‘Start’ and go to ‘Control Panel’

  2. Click ‘Appearance and Personalization’

  3. Go to ‘Personalization’ and then click ‘Change the color scheme’ to change Windows Vista appearance.

  4. When dialog box pop-up, click ‘Windows Vista Basic’ or if you would like to change to Windows 2000 style, please choose ‘Windows Standard’ instead. Then click OK.

Then your Windows Vista will change to basis appearance.
